For Families

The moment a wild orangutan swings through the canopy above you, nobody forgets it. Least of all your kids.
"Can you really do this with children?" is the question we hear most. The answer: yes, and usually better than parents expect. Families tell us again and again that Bukit Lawang was the part of the trip their kids still talk about months later.
What age suits which trek
-
From around 4–5 years, our half-day treks along the edge of the jungle work well – short enough for little legs, exciting enough for wide eyes.
-
From around 7–8 years, full-day treks become an option. Kids this age usually want to see more, not less. A night in the jungle is often already possible from around 6–7, though it really depends on the individual child and family, not just age.
-
For our more demanding 3-day treks, we'd recommend fit, adventurous kids from around 10–12.
We'll talk through what suits your family before you book. No child should be pushed too far, and no one should miss out either.
You'll find all our treks in detail, including prices and discounts for children here.

Why families trust us
We build our treks for families from the start, not as an afterthought. Pace and programme adjust to your child, not the other way round. Our guides explain things in a way kids understand: What does an orangutan eat? Why is the jungle so loud at night? What does a hornbill do with that huge beak?
Along the way, there are small discovery tasks and nature games built in. And behind it all: guides who are ITGA-HPI certified, know every trail, and are trained in first aid. Our groups stay small, with a maximum of six people, however, families stay in their own group and will not be mixed with other guests.

Practical tips for parents
Clothing & gear: Sturdy footwear matters for kids just as much as for adults. Light, long trousers and long sleeves protect against insects. A small backpack of their own, with water and snacks, gives kids a sense of independence.
Health: Check with your paediatrician beforehand about recommended travel vaccinations. Pack a child-friendly insect repellent, ideally with little or no DEET.
Sun: The canopy shelters you once you're in the jungle, but not on the way there. Sunscreen still belongs in every backpack.
Snacks: Kids need regular top-ups of energy on the trail. Favourite snacks like fruit, nuts or granola bars are always welcome. Our guides provide meals on longer treks, but a few extra snacks from home still go a long way.
