For solo travellers

Nobody here asks when you need to move on. No group vote on the next stop, no waiting around for anyone, and that's exactly what makes room for the encounters that turn a trip into something more.
Bukit Lawang is built for that. The village on the edge of the rainforest is small enough to find your feet quickly, and open enough that you rarely stay alone for long, unless that's what you're after.
Is Bukit Lawang safe for solo travellers?
Yes. Bukit Lawang is considered one of the safer destinations in Indonesia, including for women travelling on their own. It's a small village, locals are used to travellers, and most people are friendly and helpful. Common sense goes a long way: keep your valuables secure, avoid wandering into quiet areas at night, and trust your gut.
For solo women, respect is the norm here. Slightly more modest clothing in the local village, shoulders and knees covered, is appreciated and part of local custom.
Travelling solo or joining a group, you decide
Solo doesn't mean trekking alone through the jungle. If you'd rather have the trail to yourself, book a private tour (additional charge) and set your own pace and programme. If you'd rather meet people, join a small group with other solo travellers. It's often a good way to make new friends and split the cost. Both work well, we just go with what suits you. You can find the full trek details here.
What solo travellers love about Bukit Lawang
Most people mention the pace first. You decide when the day starts and ends. Then there's the cost of travel, which is low by European standards, so going solo here doesn't mean giving up comfort. And then there are the guides, who are often more than people who show you the trail. Around the campfire, they'll tell you stories about the forest, the animals and the village, and those conversations tend to stick with people longer than anything else from the trip. Our guides are ITGA-HPI certified and know every trail.

A few tips
Tell your guide upfront how fit you are and what you want to see, so the tour fits you instead of the other way round. Stay open to the conversations that happen along the way, the best moments are rarely the ones you planned. And never go into the jungle without a guide. The trails are trickier to read than they look.
Head off alone, come back with stories
A solo trip to Bukit Lawang gives you time with yourself, right in the middle of the rainforest. We make sure you feel looked after from the first moment.
