How to Get to Bukit Lawang – Step by Step

From wherever you are to the edge of the jungle

Bukit Lawang may feel like the other side of the world – but getting there is surprisingly straightforward. A flight to Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, followed by a transfer of around 3–4 hours, and you're standing at the doorstep of the rainforest. Here's everything you need to know.

---

Step 1: Flying to Medan

The closest international airport to Bukit Lawang is Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) in Medan, North Sumatra.

There are no direct flights from most countries, so expect at least one connection. Common routes go via:

  • Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines)

  • Singapore (Singapore Airlines, Scoot)

  • Istanbul (Turkish Airlines)

  • Dubai (Emirates with onward connection)

For the best fares, search on Google Flights, Skyscanner or Kayak and book 2–3 months in advance where possible.

Total travel time: approximately 15–22 hours including layover(s), depending on your departure city.

Tip: Allow plenty of connection time at Kuala Lumpur and Singapore – delays can happen, and a missed connection adds a full day to your journey.

Step 2: Transfer from Medan to Bukit Lawang

From Kualanamu Airport, there are several ways to reach Bukit Lawang:

Option A – Private shuttle (recommended for families)We can arrange a private shuttle directly from the airport or from central Medan to Bukit Lawang. Comfortable, stress-free and you'll be dropped right where you need to be. Journey time: approx. 3–4 hours.

Option B – Public busBuses to Bukit Lawang depart regularly from Medan's Pinang Baris bus terminal. Affordable and a genuine local experience. Alternatively, take a bus to Binjai and then a local minibus directly to Bukit Lawang. A great option for adventurous travellers with light luggage. Journey time: approx. 4–6 hours depending on traffic.

Option C – Private driverA local driver can be arranged in Medan – flexible, comfortable and with the option to stop along the way. Ask us and we'll point you in the right direction.

Important: Bukit Lawang has no bus stop in the village centre. Transfers typically end at the village entrance, from where it's a short walk (approx. 10–15 min) or a quick becak (rickshaw) or motorbike ride to the heart of the village.

Step 3: Arriving in Bukit Lawang

The village is small and easy to navigate. Most accommodation is right along the Landak River. If you're staying at the Garden Inn or another place we've recommended, you'll be welcomed on arrival and can take your time settling in.

Tip for your first day: After a long journey, don't rush into a trek. Arrive, wander through the village, grab a fresh juice by the river and soak up the jungle atmosphere. With a little luck, you might even spot an orangutan in the treetops on the other side of the river before your tour has even begun.

Domestic Flights & Combining Destinations

If you'd like to explore more of Sumatra – such as Lake Toba or Banda Aceh and Pulau Weh – domestic flights from Medan connect to various destinations across Indonesia. Airlines including Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air and Lion Air cover the main routes.

Tip: Book domestic flights in Indonesia as early as possible or stay flexible – prices and availability can vary considerably.
