"Is it really possible with children?" – That's one of the questions we get asked most often. And our answer is always the same: yes. Not only is it possible – many of our family guests tell us afterwards that Bukit Lawang became one of the most intense and memorable travel experiences their family has ever had.
Children experience nature with an openness and wonder that adults sometimes lose along the way. An orangutan swinging from branch to branch. A butterfly the size of your hand. The smell of the rainforest after a brief shower. For children, these aren't tourist attractions – they're pure magic.
Here's everything you need to know as a family to plan your trip to Bukit Lawang.

From What Age Is Jungle Trekking Suitable?
This depends largely on the tour you choose and your child's temperament. As a rough guide:
From around 4–5 years: Short half-day tours along the edge of the jungle, river outings and simple nature experiences work well. The pace is adapted to little legs, and our guides are experienced at keeping young children engaged and motivated.
From around 6–9 years: Full-day tours become a great option. Children this age are often enthusiastic explorers and their energy tends to be infectious for the adults around them.
From around 10–12 years: For fit children in this age group, our 2- or even 3-day treks are a genuine option – an unforgettable adventure that builds confidence and teamwork.
Important: We always discuss in advance what suits your group. No child should feel overwhelmed – and no experience should be missed.

Which Tours Are Best for Families?
Our half-day tour is the ideal starting point for families. In 3–4 hours, you'll explore the edge of the national park, with good chances of spotting orangutans, and be back in time for a relaxed afternoon.
The full-day tour goes deeper: more nature, more wildlife, more jungle atmosphere – without needing to spend the night. Perfect for families who want the full experience but prefer a comfortable bed at the end of the day.
For older children, we recommend our multi-day tours. An overnight stay in the jungle – with a campfire, a sky full of stars and the sounds of the rainforest all around – is something children will remember for the rest of their lives.

What Makes KANOPI Treks Family-Friendly?
Families are not a special case for us – they are one of the main reasons we do what we do.
That's why:
We adapt the pace and programme individually. No rushing, no pressure.
Our guides explain things in an age-appropriate way: What does an orangutan eat? Why is the rainforest so loud? What does a hornbill do with that extraordinary beak?
We build playful elements into every tour: small discovery tasks, nature observation, guessing animal sounds.
We prioritise safety: our guides know the trails thoroughly, have first aid training and respond to every situation with calm and experience.

Practical Tips for Parents
Clothing & equipment: Sturdy footwear is just as important for children as for adults. Light, long trousers and long-sleeved tops protect against insects. A small backpack for your child with their own water and snacks gives them a sense of independence – and keeps them happy on the trail.
Health: Have your children checked by a paediatrician before travel for recommended vaccinations. Bring a good insect repellent suitable for children – ideally DEET-free or with a low DEET concentration.
Sun protection: The jungle canopy provides shade, but on the way there, good sunscreen is essential.
Snacks: Children need regular fuel. Pack favourite snacks – fruit, nuts, energy bars. Our guides provide meals on longer tours, but a little something from the backpack always goes down well.
